Why Go?
One of the meanings of YUGO is a call to action - You GO! One of the core values of YUGO Ministries is mobilizing the North American Church into hands-on missions.In Acts chapter one, Jesus mentioned four areas where He was sending His Church - Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth. In today's geography, this grand mission statement includes our local area, our state/province, our country, and the world.
One of the many great things about YUGO Ministries is that it is multi-faceted. We don't serve in just one way, in one location. We are united by our common love and calling to Mexico, but the opportunities are diverse and endless. Some would argue that it is more efficient to just send a check. Although we agree that it is important to be wise and sensitive in the area of missions (see here for our thoughts on sustainable missions), we also think it is important to be actively engaged in the mission. Although not all of us will be able to get on a plane or hop in that van and make the trip down to Mexico, we hope many of you will. Why? Because that's when it becomes real. The statistics become people. The numbers become stories. You encounter real people with real hurts, real needs, and real opportunities. You get to rub shoulders with people different than you. You step out of your comfort zone. You unplug and step away from your everyday distractions. You can listen more. You gain perspective. You build relationships - not just with your Mexican neighbors, but with your own church. Sometimes these are people you see once a week or sit next to in church, but do you really know them? Spending a week in community and service together will be transforming. Not just for Mexico, not just for you, but for your church and community. Can that all happen just by sending a check? We believe that something special and life changing can happen when you engage in missions . . . when you go.
All believers are called to be in ministry. God uses people in different ways (1 Corinthians 12), and the greatest way God can use us is to share His gospel through love (1 Corinthians 13).
